Where this word comes from

* (Gelderland) First attested as afrithon in the 11th or 12th century. Etymology uncertain. Potentially derived from a prehistoric hydronym Proto-Germanic *Abhara with the dative plural form of the collectivising suffix -iþi-. An alternative etymology posits a derivation from Proto-Indo-European *Abharitôs, a hydronym derived from the root *abh- (“bend outwards, shine”) or *ap-. Not a compound of aa (“river, stream”) and voorde (“ford”). Compare Asperen and Asperden. * (Limburg) First attested as afordia in 1293. Etymology uncertain. The first attestation in Latin is likely a reinterpretation of the toponym as a compound of aa (“water, river”) and voorde (“ford, crossing”). A proposed derivation from a compound of aa (“water, river”) and vrede (“enclosure, enclosed space”) is dubious.
