From Middle Dutch brabandere, also brabantere, equivalent to Brabant + -er. The change from -t- to -d- is unexpected. The toponym is first attested in 1869 as den Brabander and derives from the demonym. It refers to (one of) the first settlers of the hamlet. Compare Hollander.
