First attested as gheynbrugghe in 1342. Originally a compound of the hydronym Gein and brug (“bridge”). The current name is a compound of drie (“three”) and mond (“mouth”) and originally belonged to an 18th century estate. The name was changed in 1960 in an attempt to dissuade Amsterdam from annexing the village.
