Where this word comes from
First attested as Doingen terp and Doeinge terp in 1511. Compound of an older form of West Frisian Donia (a surname) and the plural form of terp (“artificial mound used for habitation”). The first element was gradually reinterpreted to duin (“dune”). See also West Frisian Dúnterpen.
