The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier variant of the Frisian name. * (Groningen) First attested as hemmuurð in the 10th or 11th century. Compound of Old Frisian hem (“section of alluvial land”) and uurð (“artificial mound used for habitation”). The first element was gradually reinterpreted to heem (“home, settlement”).
