Where this word comes from

* (Hellendoorn) First attested as merler around 1390. Compound of an unclear first element and laar (“intensively cultivated forest”). Compare Marl. * (Olst-Wijhe) First attested as mernhem around 1390. Etymology uncertain. The oldest attestation seems to suggest a derivation from a compound of Middle Dutch merne (“elevated land next to a watercourse”) and heem (“home settlement”); however a development from this form into Marle is highly unlikely.
