Meaning & usage
a hamlet in Steenwijkerland, Overijssel, Netherlands
Where this word comes from
First attested as mugghenbete around 1313. Compound of the plural form of mug (“mosquito, Culex pipiens”) and an unclear second element. The second element has been interpreted as a Frisianised variant of beek (“brook, stream”) or Middle Dutch bete (“stream used for tanning leather”), but neither of these interpretations match the oldest attestations.
