If the oldest attestation does in fact refer to the current settlement, a derivation from a compound of Old Frisian Runo (a personal name) and werd (“artificial mound used for habitation”) is possible. If the oldest attestation does not refer to the current settlement, a derivation from Proto-Germanic *hriad (“reed”) and werd is possible. Compare Rauwerd.
