    neuter
Where this word comes from

First attested as Gaesberg in the 16th century. Compound of an unclear first element and berg (“hill, elevated place”). The first element has been interpreted as a derivation of dialectal scheizen (“to get stones”) or (incorrectly) as related to De Scheijdt, a nearby (former) hamlet. The toponym has also been linked to the Schaesberg family of Aachen. Formerly an independent village.
