Meaning & usage

Where this word comes from
First attested as sceddanuurthi in 855. Derived from a compound of Old Frisian *Sceddi (a personal name) or *Scetti suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi- and wurthi (“artificial mound used for habitation”). The element wurthi disappeared over time. The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier version of the Frisian name. Compare Schietecoven.
