Attested as Tarthorst in 1848. Compound of tarten (“taunt, defy”) and horst (“overgrown elevated place”). Named after a former castle that was allegedly given its name as a response to the construction of a castle named De Horst by the Bishopric of Utrecht in neighbouring Rhenen.
