First attested as uttiloch in 790-793. Potentially a compound of a term cognate to Old Saxon ôthil (“estate of land”) and lo (“light forest on sandy soil”). A proposed derivation from Old Dutch ûte (“out, outward”) is unlikely because of the presence of -dd- in later forms.
