First attested as in den vlist in 1259. The toponym is derived from the river name, which is potentially derived in turn from Middle Dutch vlies (“layer of intertwined vegetation growing on top of a swamp”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -t or, alternatively, from Proto-Germanic *flu-.
