Meaning & usage
a village and municipality of North Brabant, Netherlands
Where this word comes from
First attested as wunsdrecht in 1249. Compound of an unclear first element and -drecht (“ferry, watercourse”), viz. The first element may be Old Dutch Wodo (a personal name), Old Dutch Wunno (a personal name) or Old Dutch Woden (a personal name). According to Samplonius and van Berkel, it is not probable that the first element derives from Woen (“Odin”), as the names of pagan deities never appear in Dutch compounds with words such as -drecht or veer (but compare Woensel).
