Where this word comes from

Both toponyms are presumably derived from Middle Dutch sitter (“common land”) (indirectly derived from Latin sectura (“common land”)) with epenthetic -t. An alternative hypothesis proposes a derivation from Old High German sigituri (“section of forest intended for logging”) (derived from Latin secretarium). Compare Sittard, Zijtaart and Zittert. See also Limburgish 't Zittert, 't Zitterd. * (Limburg) First attested as Ingen Sittardt in 1612. * (Noord-Brabant) First attested as siterde in the first quarter of the 13th century.
