Meaning & usage
a neighbourhood of Land van Cuijk, North Brabant, Netherlands
Where this word comes from
First attested as Zittert in 1865. Presumably derived from Middle Dutch sitter (“common land”) (indirectly derived from Latin sectura (“common land”)) with epenthetic -t. An alternative hypothesis proposes a derivation from Old High German sigituri (“section of forest intended for logging”) (derived from Latin secretarium). Compare Sittard, Zijtaart and Zittard.
