jacht.
hunt, hunting
Meaning & usage
hunt, hunting
chase, pursuit
Where this word comes from
From Middle Dutch jacht, jaecht, jaget, from Old Dutch *jagot, from Proto-West Germanic *jagōþu (“hunt, hunting”). Equivalent to jagen (“to hunt”) + -t (“verbal noun”). Cognate with German Jagd. The form jaecht is due to contraction and jacht to subsequent pre-cluster shortening. (Compare maagd, in which an analogous development was probably hindered by the potential homophone macht.)
yacht (fast, light and now often luxurious (sailing) boat)
Hij kocht een nieuw jacht voor zijn zomervakantie.
Ze vaarden op hun jacht naar het Caribisch gebied.
Where this word comes from
Probably a shortening of jachtschip, from jacht (“hunt”) or jachten (“to hurry”) + schip (“ship”). Ultimately from etymology 1.
