Where this word comes from
Variant of spel, from Middle Dutch spel, spul, from Old Dutch *spel, from Proto-West Germanic *spil (“play, movement, performance”). The sense shifted from "play/performance" to "the equipment or props used for a performance" (as retained in kermisspul), and eventually generalized to mean "stuff, goods, belongings". Compare German Spiel.
