From Middle Dutch stappen (preterite stiep and stappede), also steppen. Probably from a merger of Old Dutch *steppan and *stappon, respectively from Proto-West Germanic *stappjan (whence English step) and *stappōn (whence German stapfen). By surface analysis, stap + -en. The sense to go out (ca. 1970) may derive from op stap (“on the town, out”).
