to feed
Where this word comes from
From Middle Dutch voeren, a contraction of voederen (with regular loss of intervocalic d, cf. broer etc.), from Old Dutch fuoderen. By surface analysis, voer + -en. Per se, the Middle Dutch form may have been merged with an Old Dutch *fuoron, from Proto-West Germanic *fōrōn, whence Old High German fuorōn, Middle High German vuoren, Alemannic German fuere (“to feed”). However, this word appears to be restricted to High German and specifically the southern dialects thereof.
