ajuga, bugleweed (Ajuga spp.)
Meaning & usage
ajuga, bugleweed (Ajuga spp.)
Where this word comes from
From Middle Dutch singroene, sindegroen, from Old Dutch *singrōni, from Proto-West Germanic *singrōnijā. Possibly an early calque of Latin sempervīvum, itself a calque of Ancient Greek ἀείζωον (aeízōon). This word represents the sole inherited survival of the Germanic prefix *sin- in modern Dutch; zondvloed also contains it, but in folk-etymologically altered form and borrowed via High German.
