Where this word comes from
Uncertain. First attested in 1937. * Bańkowski suggests the word has origins in prison slang with an original meaning of "stolen goods", particularly watches, in reference to a criminal caught with "corpus delicti", with a semantic shift to any illicit material, and ultimately to illegal alcohol. * Horbacz derives it from imbir with contamination with the word school slang word біба (biba, “drinking, libation”). Fałowski further compares it to Latin bibō. * Fałowski suggests a derivation from Lesser Polish bimb /bamb (“potato”) * Schuster-Šewc suggests a relation to bimbać.
