Some point to Hungarian csiga (“snail”); compare csigalépcső where the same word means "spiral" as the first element. Alternatively, borrowed from Slovak čiga. However, Bańkowski disputes Hungarian origin, and a Serbo-Croatian etymon has been suggested as an ultimate source. First attested in 1564.
