Possibly inherited from Proto-Slavic *nagorda or possibly a reduction of nadgroda (compare Kashubian nôdgroda /nadgroda and Silesian nadgroda). By surface analysis, deverbal from nagrodzić, where nagrodzić probably originally meant "to set up a fence" with a shift to "to set up a knocked down fence" to "to pay compensation". First attested in 1558.
