From samo- + bramka. Calque of German Selbsttor. According to Jan Miodek (see, e.g., Rzecz o języku, 1983), it is a neologism created by the editorial staff of the Sport newspaper in the 1970s in order to replace the negatively associated expression bramka samobójcza (literally “suicidal goal”).
