Where this word comes from
Uncertain; Hanna Popowska-Taborska draws a connection to German Wehr (“weir, dam”) and also rejects it due to an uncertain semantic shift, but Adam Fałowski suggests a shift of dam made of stakes or poles > bed with tall legs made of poles > primitive bed and compares it to Old Polish powyrek (“carrying pole, shoulder pole”). First attested in c. 1649. Compare Kashubian wëro /wërë.
