Meaning & usage
Badajoz (a city and municipality, the capital of the province of Badajoz, Extremadura, Spain)
Badajoz (a province of Extremadura, Spain, around the city)
Where this word comes from
From Spanish Badajoz, displacing the earlier doublet Badalhouce sometime during or around the time of the Philippine Dynasty (1581–1640). Both forms are ultimately derived from Latin Pācem Augustam through either Mozarabic or Arabic بَطَلْيَوْس (baṭalyaws), meaning the Portuguese realization of ⟨j⟩ as /ʒ/ is most likely a spelling pronunciation.
