From bombonel, a diminutival derivation from bomboană (“piece of candy”). The nickname was given to Adrian Năstase by his party colleagues while he was a member of the Chamber of Deputies and is first attested in 1993. The reason for the nickname is not evident, but has been stated by Năstase to refer to his rotund features and gentle demeanor.
