Meaning & usage
to skin, flay, excoriate
to rob; to fleece
Where this word comes from
Probably from Latin vellere, with a change in conjugation. Traditionally, it was usually thought to be from Slavic bĕliti (“to whiten”); however, this presents a problem with semantics and there is already another word in Romanian derived from this source, bili, that preserved the original meaning. Compare also Aromanian bilescu.
