Where this word comes from
Inherited from Latin lūmen. Sense 1 is a semantic loan from Slavic, which displaced the original meaning light. Presumably, the semantic evolution began with 'light' → 'in the open, visible to all' → 'the public' → 'all people' → 'the whole world'. Compare Hungarian világ and Old Church Slavonic свѣтъ (světŭ). Doublet of lumen.
