Meaning & usage
to stain, blot, speckle, smudge
to soil, taint, blemish
Where this word comes from
Probably from Vulgar Latin *pictāre, a verb based on Classical Latin pictus (“painted”). For the semantics, cf. Spanish pinta (“stain”) < pintar (“paint”, verb). The normal outcome of /kt/ is /pt/ in Romanian, but the loss of /p/ in this case can be explained as the result of dissimilation from the word-initial /p/. (Compare boteza < baptizāre and possibly pat < pactum.) Doublet of picta, borrowed from the Italian cognate pittare.
