Where this word comes from
From earlier pre, from Latin per, with meaning influenced by super. /r/ regularly metathesized after /pe/ and /te/ during Proto-Romanian, as seen in words like frate, but it was later dropped in rapid speech due to plosive-liquid cluster simplification prevalent in colloquial Romanian. That might also be why frate, likely having been inherited from the accusative fratrem, doesn't feature a /r/ in the second cluster while the first cluster does, although it might also be due to dissimilation from the preceding /r/.
