Meaning & usage

noun/ˈprjer/
  1. April (fourth month of the Gregorian calendar)

    masculine · uncountable
Where this word comes from

Inherited from Latin (mensis) Aprīlis. Probably via an early (unattested) *prire; which has either undergone metathesis or more likely by a merging of the aforementioned *prire and the archaic prie (pronounced /'pri͜e/). For the sound change of the latter compare the dialectal fărină with standard făină. Cognate to Aromanian aprir, prir, prilj, Albanian prill. Doublet of aprilie.
