Where this word comes from
Probably from an earlier form *arăbda(re), from a Vulgar Latin *ēlib(ī)dāre (“to force oneself not to desire”), from Latin ē in privative sense + libīdō, with a later apheresis of the initial a-. Compare Aromanian aravdu, arãvdari. Another theory is that it derives from a Vulgar Latin root *reemendāre, from Latin emendāre (through an intermediate early Proto-Romanian form *remda → *rembda). Other more improbable theories include a Slavic root raditi ("take care of"), Latin root reobdurāre, a derivative of Latin regere; Latin rabidāre, Latin repedāre, or a Vulgar Latin root *rubidāre (“to rage”).
