Meaning & usage

verb
  1. to dry

Where this word comes from

Most likely inherited from Latin exsūcāre, or less likely, from a Vulgar Latin root *usticāre, from ustus, from ūrō, although the normal phonetic result in Romanian would have been *usteca or *utsca, after which the intervocalic -t- disappeared; in this view, the form usuc is a modern one that replaced an original form analogically (compare Calabrian uscare (“to burn”)). Cognate to Aromanian usãc, uscari, Megleno-Romanian usc, uscari, Istro-Romanian uscu.
