Where this word comes from
From Finnish Kiiruna, clipping of Northern Sami Gironvárris (“ptarmigan mountain”) (apparently giron "ptarmigan" + várri "mountain"), a mining mountain near the city which it was named after when it was founded. Giron was Finnishized to Kiiruna, which was Swedishized to Kiruna.
