Meaning & usage
a primary area in the Centrum district of Gothenburg, Sweden
Where this word comes from
Unknown. Possibly borrowed from Finnish maja or Estonian maja (“hut, cabin”), as a 1655 map shows the name near seven small houses. If so, it is a compound of maja + -or + -na, literally “The Huts”. First attested in 1652 as Mayerne. A former suggestion claimed that the area was named after Mariebergs Kyrka (“Marieberg's Church”). However, the name of the area predates the church.
