Inherited from Old Norse malmr, from Proto-Germanic *malmaz, from Proto-Indo-European *melh₂- (“to grind”). First attested in 1286. Area outside main city center sense: originally referring to the two sandy hills north and south of Stockholm (see: Norrmalm and Södermalm), which would become part of the urban sprawl and lead to the connotation of city outskirts.
