Where this word comes from
From Old Swedish. Probably same root as mulen. According to SAOB, probably related to Danish mulm (“darkness”), Proto-Germanic *melhmô and Norwegian Nynorsk mol (“small clouds”) (used in parts of Trøndelag on the Swedish border, although Ivar Aasen doubt clarity of its etymology). Also compare Danish mul (“rain cloud”), Gothic 𐌼𐌹𐌻𐌷𐌼𐌰 (milhma).
