Of uncertain origin, but possibly from Proto-Indo-European *bed- (“to swell”) (Pok. 96), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰew- (“to swell”) (Pok. 98-102), which would indicate a Proto-Germanic *paddǭ. Cognate with Icelandic padda, Danish padde. Compare English puddle, Old English puduc (“swelling, lump, growth, wart”), Low German puddig (“swollen”).
