Where this word comes from
Attested since 1460–1461 as Old Swedish sighel, sägel (in the compounds sighla vax, sägelvax, referring to sealing wax), ultimately from Latin sigillum (see there for more). Compare Danish sigil, segl (including older forms such as segel, sigel), Gothic 𐍃𐌹𐌲𐌻𐌾𐍉 (sigljō), Middle Low German segel, seggel, Middle Dutch seghel (modern zegel), Old Frisian sigel, Middle High German sigel (modern German Siegel), Old French seel (whence French sceau and English seal). Related to insegel, försegla, besegla, signa. A large number of historical alternative forms of this word exists, most of which were borrowed from a Low or High German intermediary (see the above section). The modern standard form (and its nearest variants) derives more directly from the original Latin word, either reshaping or bypassing the old intermediaries.
