From Old Swedish skēver. Disputed Germanic origin, but perhaps from the same source as Proto-Germanic *skeuhaz (“frightened, shy”). Another possibility is Proto-Indo-European *skeh₂iwos, the source of Latin scaevus (“on the left side”). Cognate with Old Norse skeifr, Danish skæv, Middle Low German schêf, German schief, Dutch scheef, Old English *sc(e)āf (in scāffōt). See also English skew.
