First attested in the compound afsnit (“section”) by Gustavus Adolphus in 1621, from Old Swedish snīdh, snēdh, but effected by Middle Low German snit (German Schnitt; cf. schnitzen, Swedish snitsa), from Old Norse sníð, from Proto-Germanic *snīþaną. Related to snida (“to carve”). Doublet of sned and snits.
