Meaning & usage
aurochs, Bos primigenius (extinct European mammal)
aurochs bull, ox
Where this word comes from
Compound of ur (“aurochs”) + oxe (“ox”), calque of Middle Low German ūrosse (compare English aurochs), with the first element being the original word for the species, from Late Old Swedish ur, uhr, presumed from an earlier Old Swedish *ūrer m (based on dialectal ure m), from Old Norse úrr, from Proto-Norse *ᚢᚱᛁᛉ (*uriʀ) or *ᚢᚱᚨᛉ (*uraʀ)?, from a Proto-Germanic *ūraz or *ūruz. The standalone form ur is archaic and no longer used standalone in practice, but does survive standalone in the rare dialectal masculine form ure m (“angry bull”).
