Inherited from Proto-Sabaki *-cwa. Cognate with Ngazidja Comorian -tswa and Giryama -tswa. Further etymology uncertain. Possibly from Common Bantu *-còa (from which Zulu -hlwa), but Nurse & Hinnebusch consider it a Northeast Coast lexical innovation derived from *-kya (“to dawn”).
