Where this word comes from
Borrowed from an Indian language, maybe Hindi गंदुम (gandum). Nurse & Hinnebusch tentatively reconstruct Proto-Sabaki *ngano, but they also note that they are not able to distinguish ancient from modern borrowing. The word remains unchanged under all Sabaki sound changes except in Ilwana (where Proto-Sabaki *ngano would give *gano). An Ilwana attestation is necessary to date the diffusion, but they lacked this. It turns out, though, that the Ilwana etymon is ngano, pointing to recent diffusion of the word, and thus suggesting modern borrowing.
