Turkified version of the name Jankat. From West Circassian West Circassian Джанкъат (Džanqat) or East Circassian Жанхъуэт (Žanꭓʷɛt). Turkish can (“life”) + kat (“add”) is a folk etymology. The name was altered to sound Turkish (resembling the Turkish words can and kat) in order to avoid Kemalist bans on non-Turkish names and to make it easier to pronounce.
