Meaning & usage

name
  1. a male given name from East Circassian, popular among Circassians in Turkey.

Where this word comes from

Turkified version of the real name Kanşav (historically also transliterated as Qansuh, famously borne by the Circassian Burji Mamluk Sultan Al-Ashraf Qansuh al-Ghuri). From East Circassian Къанщауэ (Qanśawɛ) (Qanshawe), which is composed of къан (qan, meaning "foster child" or "prince") and щауэ (shawe, meaning "youth", "boy", or "son"). The name was altered to sound Turkish (resembling the Turkish words kan and su) in order to avoid Kemalist bans on non-Turkish names and to make it easier to pronounce.
