Meaning & usage
a male given name from West Circassian, historically used among Circassians in Turkey, now nonexistent.
Where this word comes from
From Arabic عُمَر (ʕumar). Among the Circassian diaspora in the early Turkish Republic, adopting this spelling was an act of cultural resistance as an attempt to reject the Turkified version Ömer by adapting the original Arabic pronunciation. Taking the actual Circassian form, Умар (Wumar) (Wumar), was impossible at the time due to Kemalist naming laws. This specific usage is now virtually nonexistent.
