Meaning & usage

adj/ba.ɫaˈban/
  1. large, great, big, huge, of relatively great size or extent

  2. fat, fleshy, plump, corpulent, carrying more fat than usual

Where this word comes from

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish بالابان (balaban); further etymology is unknown. According to Çağbayır, it derives from Classical Persian بالا (bâlâ, “high, upper; supreme”) + بان (bân), variant of بانگ (bâng, “voice; sound, noise”), but Nishanyan argues for a derivation from a vulgarized form of Classical Persian پهلوان (pahlavân, “hero, paladin; wrestler”). If the second hypothesis is correct, this word would be a doublet of pehlivan (“wrestler”).
